Launchpadd were appointed as architects by Dudley Metropolitan Borough Council in July 2020 to develop a detailed design for a new Health and Life Sciences Higher Education University Centre as part of the University Park Dudley, at Castle Hill in Dudley Town Centre.

DMBC had been successful in securing £25 million from the government backed ‘Dudley Town Deal’ toward capital regeneration on what is arguably the last remaining prominent ‘Gateway’ site announcing the entrance to Dudley Town Centre. Sitting below Dudley Castle & Zoo (Grade 1 Listed and a Scheduled Ancient Monument) with its iconic Tecton structures, the project is the latest piece of the jigsaw to tie together various capital projects within the current ‘Regenerating Dudley’, Town Investment Plan, with a £1billion programme of investment in the Borough.

On a sensitive site involving the demolition of the former Dudley Hippodrome theatre, the University Centre project involves the construction of a new 4,250 m2 higher education (HE) facility where Dudley College of Technology will work in partnership with the University of Worcester to deliver Level 4 and 5, degree and post-graduate programmes from September 2024 onwards. The proposed curriculum for the new facility has been designed to establish and grow a strong and comprehensive provision of HE to serve the Health and Life Sciences Sector with a specific focus on acute care, healthcare in the community and med-tech / digital healthcare technologies. The proposed centre will also include space to deliver community activities and an events arena.

The design, based upon opening up views of Dudley Castle evolves from the historic context of the site and the former Hippodrome with an aspiration to be Net Zero Carbon.
